Reading 1
(The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction)

What's confusing to me?

Although I understand the messages the author is trying to convey, the choice of words that are used in the passage is advanced. I believe the author chooses these choice of words because of the time period in which it was written in: 1936.

What I like about it?

Strangely one of the things I like about this passage is how it is written & the choice of words the author uses, it reminds me of high school when the class read passages like this out loud & stopped every time someone didn’t know the definition to a word, then we would research it all as a whole so we learned together as a unit.

What I learned from it? / What Inspired Me?

"Our fine arts were developed, their types and uses were established, in times very different from the present, by men whose power of action upon things was insignificant in comparison with ours. But the amazing growth of our techniques, the adaptability and precision they have attained, the ideas and habits they are creating, make it a certainty that profound changes are impending in the ancient craft of the Beautiful.”

I loved this quote because it describes how art over the years has been changed & processed by society & essentially how it evolves over a period of time. Whether it may be for the “better” or for the “worst” of society, that sport depends on each person individually. Some of the key factors that influence art to change over time isn't always the ability to achieve “perfection”, but sometimes what makes a piece of art great is its imperfections & how well it’s able to stand out & catch your attention compared to the others that you have previously seen in the past. The article also states that we must welcome this new change into society because it will help us to become stronger & more powerful artists. We cannot be artists that are stuck in the century that we were born in because that would limit our knowledge & the less you know the less powerful you are mentally & physically.

Another message I learned from this passage as well is that knowledge is power & once you have knowledge that is a power that one one can mentally take away from you because once you learned how to do something & put your time & effort into it, you’ll be great no matter what obstacles may come in your way. However if you settle & become comfortable & don’t push yourself then you will begin to underestimate the values & teachings that the upcoming generation has to offer you, which would eventually be your downfall/destruction of creativity.

How can I apply this to my life? / What Caught My Attention?

This passage interests me not only because I can working in the field of “the arts”, but because I can apply the implied messages that the author is trying to convey to the reader.

“Manmade artifacts could always be imitated by men. Replicas were made by pupils in practice of their craft, by masters for diffusing their works, and, finally, by third parties in the pursuit of gain.”

With this quote it pushes young artists like myself not to “imitate” or “replicate” but create something from your own visions & perspectives because people who do so are masters of their own crafts.
